Metrics and formulas
Definitions and formulas for every metric Roar reports.
Last updated
Roar reads five metrics from each post on every refresh and calculates the others from them.
Platform metrics#
| Metric | Definition | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Views | Plays or views reported by the platform | Some Instagram posts (photos, carousels) don't report views. |
| Likes | Likes or hearts | |
| Comments | Comments | |
| Shares | Shares or sends | Not reported for every post on every platform. |
| Saves | Saves or bookmarks | Often missing on Instagram, shown as "—". |
Roar doesn't estimate missing values. A metric the platform didn't report is shown as "—", not zero.
Engagement rate#
Engagement rate = (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ views
A post needs views, likes, and comments to have an engagement rate. Missing shares and saves count as zero. For a campaign, group, creator, or tag, Roar adds up engagements and views across all included posts before dividing, so larger posts carry more weight.
Spend#
The amount you paid for a post, entered in the Spend column on the Posts tab. Roar adds it up for groups, campaigns, and creators. Spend is only ever entered by you.
CPM#
CPM = (spend ÷ views) × 1,000
The cost of 1,000 views. Posts without both spend and views are excluded.
EMV#
Earned media value estimates what a post's reach and engagement would have cost to buy:
EMV = (views ÷ 1,000) × target CPM
+ likes × $0.10
+ comments × $0.50
+ shares × $2.50
The first line uses your workspace's Target CPM, the amount you'd expect to pay for 1,000 views. If Target CPM is blank, that line is left out.
The per-engagement values above are the Industry default. The Conservative preset halves them to $0.05, $0.25, and $1.25, and Custom lets you set your own.
Owners set both under Target CPM (USD) and EMV Methodology in Settings → Workspace. Changes apply to every number in the workspace, including past posts.
Other terms#
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Totals | Where every post stands today, added up |
| Growth | What was gained each day in the selected window |
| Outlier | A post at 10× or more its campaign's average |
| Breakout day | A day well above a campaign's or group's 7-day average (3× by default) |
| View milestone | A post crossing one of your view thresholds for the first time |
Not measured#
Roar doesn't measure installs, downloads, sign-ups, purchases, or revenue, and it doesn't read private analytics such as watch time or audience demographics.
